Deductible vs. Copay vs. Co-Insurance

If you have any questions about your policy’s coverage, reach out to your insurance provider directly.

Deductibles:

A deductible is a certain dollar amount that you must pay before your health insurance benefits start working. These amounts vary based on your individual/family plan.

Coinsurance:

Coinsurance is the percentage you pay for healthcare services after your deductible has been met. Not all insurance policies have coinsurance.

The cost breakdown for coinsurance could look like having you pay 20% of services while your insurance company pays the other 80%. This payment structure only applies until you meet your maximum out-of-pocket limit. If you reach this value, your health insurance company will pay for any remaining treatments within the coverage year. It’s important not to confuse your deductible with the maximum out-of-pocket limit.

Copays:

A copay is a set dollar amount that you pay at the time of service for different types of care including therapies, doctor visits, prescriptions, etc.

Copay fees do not change regardless of if you’ve met your deductible or not.

Out of Pocket Maximum:

This is the maximum amount of money you are responsible for during the course of your insurance policy. It includes your deductibles, copays, and coinsurances. If this is met, services are at no cost for you for the remainder of the policy.
